Craft Brewery Profile: Throwback Brewing Co.
It’s not often that a craft brewery gets showered with business awards, but Throwback is a little different. This country brewery on Hobbs Farm in New Hampshire has a shelf full of awards, including Best of NH 2017 Best Brewery, North Hampton Business Association Business of the Year and 2017 New England Woman-Owned Business of the Year.
Maybe part of the success is because this is an environmentally conscious, community-focused brewery that crafts great beers from local ingredients, with as much as 90 percent of each beer made with ingredients found within 200 miles of the brewery. Throwback’s commitment to sustainability includes being the largest solar-powered brewery in New Hampshire, recycling their own water and using their spent grain as feed for local livestock. Oh yeah, and the beer’s really good, too.
What’s on Tap?
You get a feel for the atmosphere and positive attitude that goes into brewing Throwback beers just from the names. There are lighthearted appellations like Hog Happy Hefeweizen, a German-style wheat beer that makes the hogs happy when they get the spent grain after brewing, and Dippity Do, an American brown ale with caramel and coffee undertones that was first brewed by Throwback co-founders Nicole and Annette more than 15 years ago. Donkey-Hote, a double IPA with a smooth taste, citrus aromas and hoppy finish, is a Throwback favorite and was named after an actual donkey that lived on Hobbs Farm for more than 30 years.
If you’re around for the winter seasonals and you’re ready to go seriously dark, try the El Chupbrewcabra, a robust porter with rich dark chocolate notes and White Gate Farm pepper spice.
Be Sure to Catch …
Say hello to head brewer Annette Lee and President Nicole Carrier if they’re around, especially if you’ve got any naysayers among your friends and family that say women can’t know beer. Annette and Nicole are living proof that women can not only appreciate a great beer, they can also make one. In fact, they can make a lot of them. Of course, there are plenty of guys who are passionate about beer on the Throwback team too, so you’ll probably want to enjoy a few samples with any of them.
