Craft Brewery Profile: Oxbow Brewing Co.
If you’re a fan of Belgian ales and you’ve been to bars and restaurants in the East Coast region, you may well have already sampled one of these farmhouse-brewed selections from Oxbow. Touring the Oxbow Brewing Co. in Newcastle, Maine, means a rustic adventure through a renovated barn, where some of the tastiest craft brews in the New England and Mid-Atlantic regions are made. If you’re looking for a Belgian beer with an American spin, you definitely want to try what the Oxbow Brewing Co. is cooking up on the farm.
What’s on Tap?
When was the last time you drink a farmhouse ale that was brewed in an actual farmhouse? A farmhouse you can visit? If you’re a fan of farmhouse ale, you’ll be kicking yourself if you visit the Oxbow Brewing Co. and don’t try their flagship ale, which is Saison brewed with American hops.
Of course, they have a lot more on the beer menu than that. You can try the dry-hopped Grizacca, with plenty of citrus flavor, the seasonal Oxtoberfest, a smoked bier de garde, or the Space Cowboy, a French-style country ale. If your tastes trend toward the darker brews, there’s Oxbow’s Town Line Porter, a dry American black ale with spelt, the Cletus, a dark ale aged in bourbon barrels, and the foreboding Infinite Darkness, a stainless aged Belgian Imperial Stout. There are plenty more beers to sample as well, including a few dozen freestyle beers identified only by number.
Be Sure to Catch …
The entire farmhouse, brewery and tasting experience can’t be missed. It’s not often you get to visit a brewery that has actual farming operations as well, and you can see it all and sample some of your Oxbow favorites in their rustic tasting room for a real countryside beer-drinking experience. The tasting room is open every day from noon to 7 p.m., and until 9 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. As part of the experience, after downing a cold one — or maybe before — you can enjoy the mountain biking trails in the woods of the Oxbow Brewing Co., Wednesday through Sunday from noon to 7 p.m.
