Craft Brewery Profile: Mystic Brewery
For the last five years or so, Chelsea, MA-based brewing company, Mystic Brewery has been making their mark on the craft brewing scene by making regionally-inspired beers using traditional methods. Tradition is important to the Mystic Brewery, as the brewery was founded by the Greenhagen Family, which has roots that go all the way back to the first poet of the American Colonies, Michael Wigglesworth.
The brewers here are taught to study and master old techniques to truly understand how great beer is made. It seems to be working, as Mystic won a gold medal at the Great American Beer Festival (GABF) in the “Indigenous Beer” category for their local yeast-fermented Vinland Two.
What’s on Tap?
Mystic Brewery’s flagship beer is a farmhouse ale that they call Saison Renaud, a provision-style Saison they ferment with their oldest continuously cultured strain of yeast. You can get your IPA fix with Mystic Brewery’s Gravity, an IPA that features Ella, Equinox and Santiam hops, or with Mystic’s Bonus Life, a double IPA dry-hopped with Equinox hops.
Other year ‘round favorites include The Hum, a rich low-frequency porter and Saturation, a pale ale with Amarillo and Mosaic hops. Seasonal selections include Mary of the Gael, a hoppy Saison for spring, and Three Cranes, a fall Saison with Cape Cod cranberries.
If you love coffee, you’ll love the Mystic x George Howell Reko Coffee Saison. You’ll also want to keep an eye out for Mystic Brewery’s dangerous-sounding limited selection brews, including:
- The still Entropy ale with three strains of yeast
- The Spectral Evidence Imperial stout
- The bourbon barrel aged Belgian-style quad with the apocalyptic title of The Last and Final Judgment
