Craft Brewery Profile: Ipswich Ale Brewery
After Samuel Adams, the name most synonymous with Boston craft brewery may be Ipswich. Ipswich Ale is one of the oldest craft brews in New England, having been in existence for more than 25 years. From a few modest brews, Ipswich has grown into a craft brewing industry unto itself, offering a wide range of both year-round and seasonal selections. It features a restaurant called the Brewer’s Table, and since you can’t always make it to the brewery, it also rents out tapmobiles so you can take the Ipswich Ale party wherever you want. If you haven’t visited the Ipswich Ale Brewery, you haven’t truly done the full craft beer tour of Boston.
What’s on Tap?
Ipswich has seriously expanded the contents of their bottles over the years, so much so that you can even find soda and mustard in some of them — but not at the same time. It still all comes back to the beer that made Ipswich famous. All year, you can sample favorites like the Ipswich Original IPA, blending English and American IPA flavors, with malty sweetness meeting dry bitterness for a delightful taste harmony. Be sure to also try Ipswich Oatmeal Stout, which is rich and malty with notes of coffee and chocolate, and Ipswich Route 1A Double IPA, with bready malts and citrus aromas thanks to the Amarillo, Mandarina and Ahtanum hops.
You’ll also want to check out seasonal favorites like the Ipswich Blubery Shandy, with fresh lemon and blueberry flavors, and Ipswich Summer Ale, a simple, unassuming blonde ale that goes great with summer. Don’t forget to try Ipswich Hop Harvest, a delicious dry-hopped American ale that is an homage to hops, with lots of Ella hops for tropical fruit and grapefruit flavors
