Craft Brewery Profile: Bunker Brewing Company
Step into this brewery’s tap room on Westfield Street in Portland, Maine, and you’ll instantly find yourself surrounded by that classic beer hall feel, with rows of wooden benches facing a long, sturdy bar lined with retro chairs.
Once you’ve settled in, prepare to enjoy some senses-stimulating lagers, ales and darker beers that will make it difficult to leave. The brainchild of Chreten Sorenson and Jay Villani, who founded the brewery in the early 20th century era garage of a Portland scrapyard in 2011, this brewery is committed to fully realizing the potential of the small artisan brewery.
What’s on Tap?
The Bunker Brewing Company’s unfiltered selections include their flagship lager, the Machine Czech-Style Pilz, 100 percent Saaz hopped with biscuit notes, a crisp taste and a spicy hop finish; the Cypher IPL, a hop forward lager with a dank resin aroma from its Eureka! Hop; and the Salad Daze, another hoppy session lager with late-kettle dry-hop Citra added for some fruity notes.
If ales are your preference, Bunker Brewing’s Rockerz IPA features Citra, Simcoe and Mosaic hops with flavors and aromas of melon, stone fruit and grapefruit, as well as Eat the Sun, a pale ale with Mandarina Bavaria hops for peach notes. If you’re looking for a more serious IPA, you might try the Bunker Double Daze Imperial IPA, a bold, hoppy, bitter selection that pairs extremely well with spicy foods.
On the darker side at Bunker Brewing Company, you’ll find the Dark Wave Baltic Porter, a Winter lager that is strong but smooth, with restrained bitterness, as well as the Trashmaster. Not for the faint of heart, the Trashmaster is a powerful Imperial Stout with flavors of roasted coffee, chocolate, raisin and licorice.
